Profession as Trial lawyer handling civil litigation in over 1000 cases and trying cases in over 25 areas of law practice. Unheard of today in this time of specialization. Last several years exclusively doing estate planning as part-time solo practitioner. Retired last year after 44 years. I was privileged to handle over $One million dollars in pro bono (free) legal work over career. Some of my most meaningful clients and legal work.
In addition to part-time law practice, worked second career in nonprofit world doing work with Agros International in Central America in water projects, economic development, and land acquisition for peasant farmers. I also worked with local nonprofit St Vincent de Paul helping homeless and veterans and finally, as Development Director for an assisted living facility called Horizon House.
Rotarian since age 33 and now in my 40th year with University District Rotary and before that, NE Seattle Rotary. Past President of both clubs and have been in many years of leadership on Board and Chair of all major committees.
Been very involved since 1998 helping organize 57 critical water projects thru Rotary in Ethiopia. Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Estimate of over 250,000 beneficiaries Since 2002, traveled on 12 separate Rotary humanitarian trips to 6 countries re polio vaccination, water and sanitation and working in orphanages (Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Viet Nam, Nicaragua and El Salvador).
Currently serving in my third year as Chair of District 5030 Environmental Sustainability Committee. Started the University District Rotary Club ESC 5 years ago. Active in environmental advocacy since 1975 after graduating from Dartmouth College and majoring in political science with a minor in Environmental Studies. Then attended Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon which specialized in an environmental law curriculum.
Active past 50 plus years in supporting the Sierra Club, Earthjustice and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Received District 5030 Service Above Self Award in 1998 from PDG Stan Dickinson.
Served on the Board of numerous other nonprofits as well and coached sports over 20 seasons (baseball, soccer and track) with my two kids.
After family, two careers, and my religious faith, Rotary is best decision of my life. And very grateful that my wife Marti and I have been married for 47 blessed years with two adult kids Chris (Boston) and Casey (LA) with their partners and 4 wonderful grandchildren.
