The Bellevue Rotary Peacebuilder Committee is developing a catalogue of mentoring opportunities for District 5030 Rotarians. Here is why:
- We Rotarians have a wealth of backgrounds and experience in a multitude of fields of work and leisure.
- Many young people need a leg up–help with school, how to navigate toward careers, and preparation for becoming independent.
- Many clubs have an active Partners for Work program or other mentoring programs for youth at various steps in life, but do not have just the right member among their members to step up for a specific task.
Here is the first of many calls for service to all District 5030 Rotarians from our catalogue.
The Lunch Buddy program is part of the LINKS Volunteer program at Lake Washington School District (Kirkland, Redmond and Sammamish). The Lunch Buddy program brings students who need a little individual attention together with caring adults. Lunch Buddies spend the lunch hour in a pre-assigned area to eat, play games, make crafts, talk, go to recess and do other agreed-upon activities. We ask Lunch Buddy mentors to commit to one lunch hour, once a week for the school year. The time depends on the age of the student but will be one hour somewhere between 11:30 and 1:00. We offer the Lunch Buddy program in fifteen elementary schools. Due to school closures, the program has transitioned to a “pen-pal” model (weekly email, US mail) or video calls. We will be coordinating a monthly video chat through Microsoft Teams to give mentors and students a chance to greet. All communications will be monitored by district staff.
